Music Pick: Lady Ella
Posted by Ben Greenman

Last year, Verve released the Ella Fitzgerald boxed set, “Twelve Nights in Hollywood,” which documented a series of live dates from 1961 and 1962 at a Los Angeles club called the Crescendo. The ten 1961 concerts had been captured on tape by Norman Granz, Fitzgerald’s manager, but the only previous release had come on a poorly conceived album called “Ella in Hollywood”: last year, they were reissued, along with a pair of shows from the following year. The set was four CDs, and pricey as a result; now Verve Select is rereleasing it in two double-disc packs. The song selection is wide-ranging (“How Long Has This Been Going On?” “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “Too Darn Hot”) and Fitzgerald is in prime voice; on the later dates, she jokes with the crowd about the venue, which had a dance club overhead.
