Tunisia’s General Labour Union said it is withdrawing its ministers from the new unity government, a day after the coalition was announced as the replacement for ousted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali’s regime.

Cabinet members from other groups should join the union in quitting the government, the union’s chief, Noureddine Taboubi, said today in a telephone interview in Tunis. Al Arabiya cited the union as saying the withdrawal was in protest at the inclusion of members of the former government in the Cabinet.
Police in the capital, Tunis, used tear gas today to disperse protesters in the center of the city as demonstrations resumed and headed toward the Interior Ministry. Al-Arabiya television reported that clashes were taking place.
